5-7 May, In the framework of Shaml project: “urbanization of refugee camps” as part of The Urban Development Research Programme's (PRUD) International Symposium of Closure: “Governing the Cities of the South: Challenges for Research and Action”, Helene Seren participe on a The Symposium of Closure which is organized by PRUD, in cooperation with UNESCO.  This Programme, established in 2001 at the initiative of France, has established a forum for discussion and exchange of information between development specialists from the North and the South. Taking into consideration the many dimensions of urban development, the forum aims at reinforcing the link between research and urban policies. The Symposium will address three major themes: Strategies of Actors and Logistics of Action, The Configuration of Urban Space and Social Structures, and Urban Policies and Management.

19 - 28 May, Social Activities Centre (Furusiyya), Jericho: Remembering Jenin exhibition and film. The opening ceremony in Jericho was very successful, with speeches by Dr. Saeb Erekat and Dr. Sami Musallam, and about 150 people in attendance. The event was organized as a part of their Nakbeh 55 and Jenin destruction commemoration activities, and was followed on Thursday 22nd May by Mohammad Bakri’s documentary film Jenin Jenin, at 6.30pm.

10-13 May,  Jalazone Refugee Camp: The exhibition defied closure to be shown in the hall of the Dawaymeh Committee, Jalazone camp. Concurrently with this we screened a series of documentary films to commemorate the destruction of Jenin the previous year, and 55 years since the Nakbeh. We acknowledge and thank the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung for their support.

8 January, Panel discussion on the “Humanitarian and Political Aspects of the Palestinian Condition”, at the Ambassador Hotel, East Jerusalem. Shaml and the Alternative Information Center organized meeting of international scholars researching catastrophes and human disasters around the globe and local researchers and field practitioners working in local or international agencies.  The panel members included locally based workers presenting a variety of opinions and analyses as well as Israeli and Palestinian human rights advocates and local and international humanitarian agencies, (Summary and program).

This lecture was a cooperation between Shaml and The Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit University. (English Abstract), (French Abstract).

19, 20 October: Shaml has participated on the Euro-Mediterranean NGOs meeting at Brussels. Shaml co-founded the Euromed Migration Network (EMN). The objective of the network will be to coordinate the work of immigrant and refugee advocacy organizations and research institutions and governmental and diplomatic institutions such as the European Commission and the European Union. The meeting marked a crucial step in stimulating European activity regarding Palestinian refugee issues. (See the resolution of the Migration panel).
